What Happens If You’re Late To Class

When I was in school it was a bit embarrassing being late to class because you had to enter when the teacher was in the middle of speaking so everyone would notice and watch you walk to your seat, and you’d mumble “sorry I’m late”. At the school I’m volunteering at, it’s definitely worse.

I don’t know whether this is a Panama-wide thing or even a school-wide thing or whether the teacher of this class just invented it, but every time someone walks in late, the whole class (prompted by the teacher) sings the late song to them. The translation of the words is basically:

“Good day, now you are here” *clap clap clap* “Good day, now you are here” *clap clap clap* “We are all content, we are all happy, good day, now you are here” *clap clap clap*

It’s got a really patronising tune and the late person pretends not to care and walks to their seat trying to keep a straight face. Sometimes we end up singing it 3 times in a row because 3 late people come in 1 minute after one another. The other day I thought I was going to be late and get sung to but thankfully I was still 2 minutes early.
